Here are a few tips for migrating your site to Shifter.
Preparations Before Migration
1. Update all plugins and themes
Shifter automatically keeps your WordPress installation up to date. However, you’ll need to update your plugins and themes manually. Outdated plugins and themes can cause errors during artifact creation or result in missing or corrupted posts and pages within the artifact. Be sure to update your plugins and themes to the latest versions before migrating your site to Shifter.
2. Remove WordPress caching plugins
Are you using WordPress caching plugins?Caching plugins can be useful on traditional hosting platforms, but they are not necessary here. Since Shifter generates static versions of each page on your site, caching plugins may conflict with that process.
Common WordPress caching plugins that should be disabled or removed when using Shifter are as follows:
- Zencache
- SNS Count Cache
- WP Super Cache
- Simple Cache
- WP Fastest Cache
- W3 Total Cache
- Comet Cache
- WP Rocket
3. Remove Unused Themes and Plugins
Unused plugins and themes can cause timeouts during the migration process. Check for any unused plugins or themes that might cause issues and remove them completely.
4. Check PHP Compatibility for Plugins and Themes
Shifter runs on PHP 7.2. Use the following plugins to verify that all your plugins and themes are compatible with this version of PHP.
- PHP Compatibility Checker
- Theme Sniffer
