Troubleshooting Custom Domains

Here are some general troubleshooting tips for adding a custom domain to your Shifter site. If these tips don’t resolve your issue, please contact our support team!

Verification Timeout

If a domain is not assigned to a site, domain verification will fail 72 hours after the request is made.

Possible Solutions:

  • Clear the domain verification timeout, then register and verify the domain again.
  • Please also refer to our separate documentation for troubleshooting domain verification.

If you receive the error “CNAME is in use by another CDN” when attaching a domain name to your site

If you see the following error: “In use by another CDN,” it means that the domain is currently in use by another Amazon Web Services (AWS) account, so it cannot be assigned to your account. This may include other products built on AWS.

Possible solutions:

  • Detach that custom domain from any other CloudFront distribution you manage.
  • Remove the alias and custom certificate from your current CloudFront distribution or from any disabled CloudFront distribution.
  • Identify and delete any previously used services associated with that custom domain.

Disabling Web Hosting on S3

AWS S3 may be used as a bucket name with website hosting enabled. For more information, please refer to the official AWS documentation: Adding and Moving Alternative Domain Names (CNAME) How do I set up an S3 bucket for static website hosting?

403 Error

The most common cause of this error is attempting to access a custom domain that hasn’t been attached to your site. To summarize the domain setup process, you need to verify the domain, attach it, and update your DNS records to point to Shifter.

Possible solutions:

  • The solution is to attach the domain to your Shifter dashboard.

Domain Verification

To use a custom domain with Shifter, you must first verify it. To do this, start by following the steps in the how-to guide on assigning a domain. If you’re still having trouble verifying your domain after following these steps, here are a few tips to help you check your configuration.

Double-check your CNAME record

If you copied and pasted the verification CNAME from the Shifter dashboard, it may contain some extra characters or the domain itself. You do not need to include the top-level domain in the record. For example, we’re using the www version of the domain here.
