About This Article

This article is a dedicated follow-up to the “Custom Domains in Shifter” guide on Google Domains. Before following the steps below, you must first register your domain name with Shifter and obtain the domain verification records by following the “Custom Domains in Shifter” guide.

Sample Domain and DNS Records

  • Sample domain: example.com

    • www.example.com

  • Sample domain in Shifter: abc123.on.getshifter.io. def456.cloudfront.net.

  • Sample validation records:

    • For example.com
      • Name: _abcde.example.com
      • Type: CNAME
      • Value: _01234.acm-validations.aws.
    • For www.example.com
      • Name: _hijkl.www.example.com
      • Type: CNAME
      • Value: _56789.acm-validations.aws.

Configuring DNS Validation Records

  1. Go to the login page ( https://domains.google.com).

  2. Click the [My Domains] menu, then select your domain name in the [My Domains] section.

  3. Click the [DNS] menu and verify that [Use Google Domains nameservers] is selected.

  4. Scroll down to the [Custom Resource Records] section.

  5. Enter the following record set.

    • For example.com,
      • enter _abcd in the first box.
      • In the second box, select CNAME.
      • In the [TTL] field, enter 1H.
      • In the [Data] field, enter _01234.acm-validations.aws. Click the [Add] button.
      • Click the [Add] button.
    • For www.example.com
      • _hijkl.www. In the second box,
      • In the second box, select CNAME.
      • In the [TTL] field, enter 1H.
      • enter _56789.acm-validations.aws. Click the [Add] button. ​
      • Click the [Add] button.

    Note: Never delete the validation record.

Configuring DNS Records After Domain Verification

  1. Add a CNAME record. Once domain verification is complete, configure the CNAME record for your domain name.

    • For www.example.com
      • In the first box, enter www.
      • In the second box, select CNAME.
      • In the [TTL] field, enter 1H.
      • In the [Data] field, enter abc123.on.getshifter.io. or def456.cloudfront.net. Click the [Add] button.
      • Click the [Add] button.

    Note: Never delete the verification record.

[Optional] Domain forwarding (from the zone apex/naked domain to the www-prefixed domain)

Set up the domain redirect for example.com.

  1. Go to the “Website” menu.
  2. Click [Set Up Redirect].
  3. Configure the settings as follows:
      1. Enter the naked domain name in the “Source” field. Example: example.com
      1. Enter the URL of the domain name with the www prefix. Example: https://www.example.com
      1. Click the [Forward] button to save your changes.
  4. The domain forwarding has been created.
