What Is an ALIAS Record?
An ALIAS record is a virtual record type we created to enable behavior similar to a CNAME record at the top-level domain. For example, if your domain is example.com and you want to associate it with a hostname such as myapp.herokuapp.com, you cannot use a CNAME record, but you can use an ALIAS record.
Configuring as an ALIAS Record
Some DNS providers support ALIAS records. A list of supported providers is included in the documentation. If you’ve registered an APEX domain (or root domain/naked domain — a domain without prefixes such as www or blog), you can also enter or select the CloudFront domain value displayed in the Shifter dashboard (e.g., def456.cloudfront.net).
This article presents two examples of configuring ALIAS records with MuuMuu Domain and AWS Route 53.The CloudFront domain is displayed on the site’s “Live > Overview” page. Before accessing your DNS provider, copy the CloudFront domain value (in this example, def456.cloudfront.net) and paste it into Notepad, Evernote, or your favorite sticky note app.
