Recently, it has become more common to publish sites in multiple languages. One of the great things about WordPress is that it makes multilingual sites easy to create using free multilingual plugins. For instance, you can easily create a site with WordPress and use a public plug-in to quickly switch from English to Chinese on a single site.
Polylang, among other things, is one of the most popular multilingual WordPress plugins. Featuring easy configuration and ongoing maintenance, Polylang currently has over 400,000 installations making it a leader amongst multilingual plugins.
Previously, Shifter users have been limited to creating separate sites for each language they are hoping to support. But now, utilizing the power of WordPress plugins, multiple language support has become possible even on static sites.
Let’s get started!
Polylang provides extensive documentation, so first time users should be able to get started easily.
Install and activate Polylang in the plug-in.
Points to watch out for
Only the following patterns are supported in [Modify URL] in [Language] → [Settings]. Please be aware that changing these settings has been known to cause the staticization process to fail.
If any of the settings have been changed and the artifact fails to generate, please return settings to default and try again.
Done! We now have a multilingual static site running on Shifter!
For the language switcher settings please check the Polylang documentation.
Sign up for a free trial today and start making static multilingual sites using Shifter. Once you’ve given it a try, we’d love to hear your feedback.
