WCEU Session Highlight: How better performing websites can help save the planet.

Jason McClintock | June 14, 2019

The contemporary internet has a sustainability problem. The average file size of sites has increased dramatically over the past few years. Larger files means it takes more energy to store and deliver those files. Internet usage has also increased, which means an increase in power consumption from website delivery. Compounding this issue is the fact that typical websites need to be running 24/7 to allow access whenever it’s needed.

That’s why we’re looking forward to Jack Lenox’s talk at WordCamp Europe How better performing websites can help save the planet. Jack will be discussing how we can lower the environmental impact of the internet. This is a growing problem as Jack has pointed out in his talk description, stating that “carbon footprint is larger than that of global air travel”. Solutions like powering data centers with renewable energy is certainly a respectable method of creating a more sustainable internet, but if we are going to create a green internet, we need to create sustainable solutions that are accessible to average users.

Shifter offers a solution to this problem Because Shifter sites deliver a static image of your site, there’s no need to be running a server constantly. We only run the backend of your site when you actually need it meaning significant savings in cost and energy consumption. Shifter’s architecture allows us to use only the amount of computing power that we need to run your site with zero waste. This is not only energy efficient but also offers great performance.

At Shifter, we believe that we have a responsibility to act responsibly and do right, not just by our customers, but also the planet. Part of our parent company DigitalCube’s mission is the protection of the environment. That’s why we’re happy to be part of a movement away from the traditional hosting solutions that draw an immense amount of power. We’re also happy that we can offer a solution that’s not just good for the environment, but also provides ease of use and accessibility to average users.

But we still have a lot to learn. That’s why we’ll be checking out Jack’s talk at WordCamp Europe. We hope to see you there!
